Gwen Stefani: From Singer to Designer

Gwen Stefani truly is a superstar. Not only does she have a hit singing career, but she also maintains a thriving fashion line. Her L.A.M.B. clothing products has been highly successful. Under this label, Stefani creates everything from tracksuits to handbags to a signature fragrance. She even introduced baby clothes into her line and started developing fashion watches.

L.A.M.B. is an acronym for "Love Angel Music Baby." Stefani chose this for the name of her clothing line because of its significance to her musical career. Love Angel Music Baby was the singer's first solo album. Stefani founded the brand in 2003 and had her first runway debut the following year. Since then, the line has grown tremendously and garnered attention from some of the biggest names in fashion.

So, what made one of the world's most popular singers turn into a fashion designer? For one, Stefani realized she had a great consumer base to market to. Stefani developed a very unique fashion sense through her singing career. As her popularity bloomed, more and more fans began to imitate her style. Realizing this, Stefani, and more importantly her marketing team, realized there would be a large pool of potential buyers of the star's clothing. After all, it's easier and more appealing to buy a Gwen Stefani outfit than recreate one with generic pieces.

Stefani was also motivated by her family's experience with fashion. The singer actually comes from a long line of seamstresses and tailors. This family tradition stretches as far back as her great-grandmother. Growing up, Stefani spent a lot of time around fabric shops and sewing machines. In fact, when she was a child, her mother would make her outfits by hand. As she got older, Stefani learned to make her own outfits. She even used this skill to create the clothes she wore on stage at many of her early concerts. However, she soon found there was little time for sewing in her busy schedule.

As Stefani's fame grew, she was no longer able to design her own performance clothes. However, the singer never lost her passion for style. After connecting with stylists and design consultants, Stefani finally was able to start her own fashion line. To create her unique styles, Stefani combined elements of different cultures ranging from Jamaican to Japanese. She regularly sports her own products and even references L.A.M.B in some of her songs. Those interested in buying her clothing can do so at more than 275 retail chains worldwide and through the brand's online store.

L.A.M.B takes in some ninety million dollars annually. This may seem like pocket change to Stefani, but the star is clearly not in it for the money. Ultimately, fashion design is just another creative outlet for the celebrity singer. She makes the clothes she loves accessible to everyone, and is able to grow professionally in the process.
